Alhaji Usman Bello, the Kanwa Katsina, during the Grand Durbar organised for him to mark its 35 years retirement  from the Nigerian Customs Service(NCS) three years.

For  Alhaji Usman Kankara Bello , a  retired Comptroller of the Nigerian Customs Service(NCS) and  the  Kanwa Katsina , being the current Head of the Ketare District in  Katsina  State, it has indeed been true,  that the good ones must shine even in darkness , judging by  his antecedents in the Customs and  the various developmental measures he has initiated  to better the lives of the people in  his domain.

When Alhaji Bello was in the Service of the Customs , as a vintage Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tin Can Command  among others, for solid 10 years,he was exceptional, knowledgeable ,  respectful  and dutiful while he was  a friend of the Media because of his diligence and his culture of treating  journalists  with utmost respect .Little wonder he bagged an Award then, as the Best Customs PRO.

Also as a Comptroller , he excelled in all the areas he served and assignments he handled , while , for instance , he demonstrated patriotism  and valour  as he made various spectacular seizures running into hundreds of millions of naira  and raked a lot of billions of naira revenue into the  coffers of the Federal Government  when he served as  a Controller in  Katsina, Sokoto , Kebbi, Zamfara   and Jigawa  and FCT , Abuja Customs Commands.

The Kanwa Katsina also overwhelmed smugglers on the waterways , and  collected revenue for the Customs , when he served as the  Controller of the Customs Marine Command , with head quarters in Port Harcourt , Rivers State , which covers Edo, Delta , Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Balyesa States , where he eventually retired after 35 years meritorious service to his fatherland.

But he has never been tired of rendering selfless service to humanity since he retired. This is why he has since then been contributing to the development of journalism  , health , education , agriculture and environmental sanitation  and others areas of the economy.

It was then not a surprise ,that the Katsina State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalist(NUJ)  had to bestow an award  of excellence on him recently  for his achievements and contributions to the development of the Customs as well as Ketare  District in particular, and Katsina State in general.

An alumnus of the prestigious Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies , Kuru , near Jos, where he earned the Mni National Award, his various strides and the way he made Katsina State proud in the Customs , made the late former President of Nigeria, Alhaji  Shehu Yar’ dua  to bestow an Award  on him for the  proud manner he represented the State.

However , after retirement  and being blue blooded, his patriotism and zeal to uplift   humanity , particularly  to serve his people and improve their welfare   and contribute more  to the development of Katsina  State and Nigeria in general , as he did in the Customs, has not waned, and his elevation to that enviable royal seat has seen him implementing these virtues.

A  philanthropist ,even with his very modest means,  he has been able to contribute financially to the education of so many of the indigenes of the Katsina State at primary , secondary and even up to tertiary level while he has also affected the lives of so many of them in so many other ways , which have made it possible for their standard of lives and living to improve.

As the District Head of Ketare , he has been a key figure among personalities assembled by Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State, who have  been brokering peace initiatives between the Fulani Herdsmen and farmers in the State.

He has proved to be a mentor to up-coming leaders in the Ketare District as he has been involved in the encouragement of  best brains of the district , such as when he presented ,Dr  Muhammed Dandashire  the  2019  Best Graduating  medical student of Ahmadu Bello University , Zaria ,  who won about nine awards in his set to Governor Aminu Masari for  recognition , while he has been involved in honoring Prefects , Head Boys of Second schools in the districts.

Alhaji Bello has always been a good social crusader for his people as he has continuously educated them on the negative implications of open defecation in shops , market places and motor parks and the benefits of their , having modern toilets in their various places of abodes.

His enlightenment in this area, has made his people to be on the way to benefitting from the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF)  Open defecation Free Programme and  certification  which includes sinking boreholes  to improve access to clean and potable water, and construction of more toilets in the communities.

What’s more, despite the importance of Islamic education to the Northerners , he has also made his people to appreciate the benefits of Western Education  and its positive impact in their lives and daily activities thus contributing to their social development .

Also, the Kanwa Katsina has consistently educated the people of Ketare  to submit themselves for enumeration  by the relevant agencies  of government  at all times, for them to reap the benefits in terms of provision of health care , education and  social amenities .

Consequently, the ex- customs Comptroller and District Head of Ketare has indeed been a true son of Nigeria, Father and leader of his people and a selfless Nigerian who is  untiring to invest in his people and State as well as his country.

The tremendous impact , he has thus made in the lives of his people and his  contributions to the economy has continued to make the indigenes of Ketare to be eternally grateful to him.Little wonder , they just concluded a grand- Dubar, they organised for him to  mark his three years of retirement in the Customs .
