Encomiums poured in from dignitaries who graced the Thanksgiving Mass for the Emeritus Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, His Grace,Most Reverend , Dr ,Felix Alaba Adeosin Job, to mark his Golden Jubilee as a Bishop.
The Mass , which held at St Mary Catholic Cathedral, Ibadan on July 3 , 2021 was graced by personalities such as the Executive Governor of Ekiti State , Dr Kayode Fayemi ; the Deputy Governor of Oshun State, Mr Benedict Alabi , represented by his elder brother; The Ashipa of Ibadan , Oba Eddy Oyewole and the retired Assistant Inspector General(AIG) of Police, Mr Tunji Alapinni.
Over 70 priests from within and outside Nigeria and seven Bishops, including the Emeritus Cardinal ,His Eminence (Dr) Anthony Okogie; the Archbishop of the Lagos Archdiocese, His Grace ,Most Rev, Dr Alfred Martins and the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Ibadan ,His Grace, Most Rev, Gabriel Abegunrin among others were at the Mass.
Governor Fayemi in his remarks said that the 50 years of Archbishop Job as a Bishop has been that of very active , devoted and committed service and sacrifice to God and the church in the Lord’s vineyard.
Fayemi , who disclosed that as a child ,he was an alter server to the Bishop at St Gabriel’s Catholic Church Mokola, Ibadan, said he was proud to have attended the Mass , so as to be a witness to history , saying the Golden Jubilee celebration has been a landmark of achievements for the Bishop.
The Governor stated that Archbishop Job’s commitment to the work of God in all the years years he was in active service before he became an Emeritus has been that of soul winning for God and that of transformation ,which made it possible for the ertswhile Catholic diocese of Ibadan to transmute to an Archdiocese.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oshogbo, His Lordship ,Most Rev, Dr John Oyejola said on in the Sermon he delivered that though, Archbishop Job was the youngest of the seven Bishops who were elevated to that position in 1971 , he pointed out that he has worked and served passionately with good disposition since then , preaching the gospel,winning souls and developing the church vigorously.
He said despite his status as an Archbishop , Dr Job has always been very humble, simple and humane , adding that he took his calling as that of service to Christ and the church .
The Bishop disclosed that in the Archbishop’s quest for the development of the church , he ensured that he transformed the Ibadan Archdiocese to the ‘Vatican City of Africa’ through evangelization and building of facilities and infrastructure.
He also described the celebrant as an orator, and an articulate clergy who preaches and teaches the words of Gods for hours , while stating the facts, and without mincing words.
According to him, the Archbishop in his 50 years as a Bishop never sought his personal agenda , but that of the body of Christ, a situation he said made it possible for him to accomplish so much .
He disclosed that Dr Job , by his words and deeds, has succeeded in bringing ‘humanity to Christ and Christ to humanity’ . Oyejola also described the celebrant as an ‘Encyclopedia ‘ , a clergy of very good memory who always reminded fellow Bishops of things that happened years ago at the meeting of the Bishops.
Other dignitaries who spoke at a grand reception that was organised for him after the Mass , at St John Paul II Hall, Seat of Catholic Chaplaincy, University of Ibadan also attested to his humble nature, his passion for the work of God , physical development of the Archdiocese and his gift of the garb.
The Archbishop in his response thanked God for making him an instrument for the propagation of the gospel, as well as expressed his appreciation to all those who attended the Thanksgiving Mass.
The Bishop admonished all Catholics to stand firm with Christ and ensure that they follow strictly the doctrines of the church and restrain from copying what obtains in other Christian denominations .
He disclosed his plan to build a Renewal Centre in the Archdiocese for the use of priests and catholics , for the purpose of renewal , adding that the church is in dire need of such facility .
Some other bishops who attended the mass, include Emeritus Bishops of Ekiti and Oshogbo Dioceses , Most Reverends Michael Fagun and Julius Adelakun as well as the Bishops of Abeokuta , Ekiti , Oyo Dioceses, Most Reverends Peter Odetoyinbo, Felix Ajakaiye and Emmanuel Badejo among others.
Emeritus Archbishop Job was ordained a Priest in 1966, a Bishop in 1971 then Archbishop in 1994,making him the first Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese..He retired on October 29, 2013.
