For his unalloyed commitment to the promotion of peace in the maritime sector of , Comrade Adewale Adeyanju , the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has been conferred with a Meritorious Award, by the League of Maritime Editors and Publishers, (LOMEP).
Comrade Adeyanju bagged the Award, during the Town Hall Meeting on ‘Effective Digitalization of the Nigerian Seaports organised by LOMEP at the Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos, over the weekend.
In a citation read on him by the League’s Vice President, Shola Fadeyi, who is also the Chairman , organizing committee of the Town Hall Meeting/ Award , during the presentation of the Award to him, represented by Mr Oniah Irazu , the Deputy Secretary General of the MWUN , it was stated that he won the award for his Peace initiative.
According to the citation, Comrade Adeyanju’s love for peace has made him to always adopt the instrument of collective bargaining agreement and negotiations to amicably resolve issues between the Union and its members employers , instead of resorting to unnecessary strike actions, that will disrupt the peace of the maritime sector.
The Chairman of the Seaports Terminals Operators of Nigeria (STOAN) , Princess (Dr) Vicky Hasstrup ,who presented the award to Comrade Adeyanju on behalf of the League also attested to the role, he played in promoting peace in the maritime sector , despite that he was a labour leader, saying that he deserved the honour given to him by the LOMEP.
The League said that Adeyanju’s capacity to utilize the instrument of collective bargaining to handle conflicts, the fact that he’s peace lover , a good labour leader , a detribalized Nigerian , a compassionate person , a philanthropist, nationalist, a bridge builder, devout muslim, a patriot , a conscientious person , an advocate of justice , a patriot and a reformer per excellence, community leader , a devout muslim and a good family man were qualities that earned him the award.
The citation disclosed that through Adeyanju’s robust leadership style , he has ensured that none of his members suffers maltreatment or discrimination from their employers, through his engagement with relevant organisations ,saying that he has been unwavering in making sure that maritime workers are better remunerated among their peers across the globe.
The League stated that because of Comrade Adeyanju’s love for peace , he would always want to leave behind a legacy of sustenance of peace , a well remunerated maritime worker and a maritime industry , where dockworkers, NPA personnel, shipping workers, seafarers would be given their due respect.
It said Adeyanju reformed the union , introduced the members into the pension scheme , while he used his first tenure as the President General of the MWUN to change the perception of stakeholders about the Union as that ,characterised by acts of hooliganism, and to introduce a robust and organised leadership which believes in dialogue a to agree on issues.
According to the Citation, because Adeyanju is a firm believer of the fact that the primary objective of any union leader is to protect the welfare of his members, he’s using his second tenure to continue to doggedly improve on the welfare of the members and maintain peace in the maritime sector
It said Adeyanju , from time, has been blessed with the rare managerial qualities of leadership , discernment and has been known to be a thoroughbred professional , who has been equipped adequately for the arduous task of management of men and material.
Comrade Adeyanju has been the President General of the Maritime Workers Union of MWUN since 2017, when he won a landslide election into the position, and won a second term, early this year .Before then, he was the National Treasurer and President of the Dockworkers Union of Nigeria (DUN) , for two terms each.
