Novel strategies adopted by the Port Manager(PM) of the Tin Can Island Port, Mr Buba Jibril has facilitated the decongestion of the Port’s access road.
The access road , leading to the Port and the Second Gate as well as to the Port Terminal Multi services Limited (PTML) , adjourning the Port, has always been blocked most of the time, particularly by trucks , making it impossible for other vehicles and tricycles to drive past.
Investigation by Marine and economy , however showed that the road , since the beginning of this year , not long after the assumption of duty of the PM , is now usually free .
This, it was gathered has been due to the fact that the PM banned the practice of stuffing and un-stuffing of containers on the access road , while it directed that NPA security personnel and the Police be stationed on the road to check such anomaly.
The fact that the Port Management had also embarked on enlightenment and education for the truck drivers on the need to always ensure that they maintain their vehicles properly , has also reduced the rate at which their trucks break down on the access road, causing obstruction .
The measure has thus checked the high rate at which trucks are seeing being repaired on the access roads and halting traffic movement.
Sources said that the measures that have been put in place by the PM , have also made it possible for trucks moving into and out of the Port not to congest the access road and the Port Gate as well as disrupt free low of traffic .
The free flow of traffic on the access road was also said to have made it possible for tricycles ,to easily transport commuters , namely importers and customs agents , to transact business at the PTML and the PTML Customs Command, near the Tin Can Port.
The development has also been hinged on the fact that the Port Manager has ensured that the road is kept in good shape and all the bad portions filled up, through the construction company responsible for the maintenance of the access road.
It was learnt that the inputs of the Port Management towards the ongoing electronic call up system has also made it possible for the movement of the trucks to be orderly at the Port Gate .
The measures , were said to have enhanced the efficiency of the Port, despite the impact of the ongoing repair of the Oshodi Mile 2 Apapa Expressway, which also serves as an access to the Tin Can Island Port..
