As part of efforts to enhance security along Nigeria’s , and further secure the marine environment , the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has said that the Federal Government is planning to establish Coast Guards that will man the coast lines in the country.
The Minister made the disclosure in Iragbiji , his hometown in Osun State on Saturday at the 32nd edition of the annual Iragbiji Day celebrations, where funds were raised for different community development projects.
Oyetola spoke about the existence of a deep blue project that deploys gunboats and other equipment for security on the coastline, adding that for Nigeria to ensure coastal tourism, it must provide security, adding that it is the reason the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry is working with the Navy, Marine police and others to ensure adequate security.
According to him, ‘’We are already looking at the possibility of establishing coast guards which will be designed essentially to ensure the safety of our coastline,”
“If we want to ensure coastal tourism, we must provide adequate security and we are working with the navy, marine police and others to ensure security of our waterways.”
Oyetola said Nigeria has not less than 853 kilometres of coastline in Nigeria and about 10,000 perimeter of inland waterways.
The Minister also stated that the government is considering the re-establishment of a national shipping line to capture a substantial share of the estimated $10 billion annual ship charter market within the country.
